Fresh Organic Produce and…Food! What’s new at the Organic Market?
OBDM started next to the tuck shop selling organic veg and fruit, bread and flowers.
Then came the crepes, ice cream and coffee!
Today we have up to 15 stalls including organically grown fresh produce, ice cream, coffee, juices, smoothies, hand crafted goods and…..Healthy Food. See below.
Students are encouraged to apply to offer their handmade, hand-grown or baked goods and to use the market as a platform for class fund-raisers.
FOOD UPDATE
Over and above Mosima’s fresh organic fruit and veg, a cup of organic coffee and ice cream,
the food offering at the market continues to expand as our dedicated healthy food providers toil in the early hours to bring “delicious and nutritious” food that appeals to young and all. Behind the scenes is the challenging search for ingredients that meet their own organic and ethical standards, in a cost effective way. These are modern pioneers indeed, as we strive to put food on the table which brings health and vitality, is nutrient dense, and is also healthy for the whole planet and our future on it.
Our 5 star organic food stalls are growing in popularity:
*****Ladle of Love-selected and made with love by Kim and her home baking team. Amazing salads, wheat free wraps, oat biscuit thins, quiches and more! The hummus is so good!
*****Indikaap! Try Michelle’s Pani Puri or Cashew Nut Satay Wraps.
*****Mawganics is back. See Helen’s full write up below. Snacks can be healthful! Here is an extract:
… wholesome, nutritious snacking food that is free of GMO's, refined sugar, hydrogenated and trans fats, colorings, thickeners, emulsifiers, pesticides, excessive packaging / waste and dairy.
Then we have the stalwarts:-

Naz’s Indian Curries
The German Bakery

Message from Helen Hoekstra
Helen Hoekstra Mawganics
After many requests from mothers and feeling the need to align myself with my own passion, I have come up with a new venture which I am hoping will become a great resource for parents and non-parents alike.
So hereby I am launching my list of offerings (see attachment on Mawganics.co.za website under the lunchbox tab) which includes a full list of what is on offer, with a photo and a descriptions of the item, as well as ingredients and the price.
Parents can pack these into their children's lunch boxes, use them at birthday parties and just have them around for anytime snacking.
My aim with this venture is to ensure that parents have access to wholesome, nutritious snacking food that is free of GMO's, refined sugar, hydrogenated and trans fats, colorings, thickeners, emulsifiers, pesticides, excessive packaging / waste and dairy.
Everything is made fresh. As it is real food it has a shelf life, un-like chemically supported supermarket convenience.
All my food - unless otherwise stated - is gluten free, but due to cross contamination cannot be guaranteed for those with highly sensitive intolerances. All products are lactose free.
A large percentage of all my products use organic ingredients and are therefore not always as economical as mass produced conventional food. However, my emphasis is on quality and not quantity.
Healthy Food offerings for lunchboxes, parties and snacks
- Roughly 80% of ingredients used are organic (availability dependant)
- Honey is always RAW.
- All food is free of GMO’s, preservatives, refined sugars, dairy, thickeners, emulsifiers and is mostly gluten free (unless otherwise stated. For example, because of possible cross contamination I cannot guarantee gluten free oat products.)
- We use only Spring water.
- Our kitchen uses nuts, so our products are not suitable for those with nut allergies.
- Everything coming out my kitchen is handled and fed with love and care to support your growing child’s needs and wants.

What is PGS?
It stands for “Participatory Guarantee System” which is supported by IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Movements-phew). If you would be interested in becoming a part of our own peer review organic quality assurance programme, visiting farms and suppliers, please contact Roger Oxlee at [email protected]
What is The Conscious Consumer Group?
Has it occurred to you that every time you spend money, you are “voting” for the particular supplier or service provider, who will then continue to produce or provide that item? We as consumers determine the development of our society and our planet by our spending. Are we ‘response-able’ consumers? The CCG meets every Thursday at 7pm in The School Library. We show films such as ‘Symphony Of The Soil’ and ‘Origins’. We discuss broad issues, people and technologies that are changing the world. We have guest speakers-farmers, suppliers and agro-ecologists from our local organic and consumer movements.
