🥜 The Calm Before Harvest… 🌿

At Elandsdraai Pecan Growers, our trees are quietly doing their final work before harvest begins. Inside each shell, the pecan kernel is slowly filling — building flavour, texture, and quality.

This stage is crucial. The tree now directs its stored energy into the nut, and healthy foliage plays a vital role in producing a full, well-developed kernel.

In the coming weeks, the outer green husks will begin to split — the natural signal that our pecans are ready to be gathered.

The countdown to harvest has begun, and we can’t wait to share this season’s crop with you! 🌾

🌱 Spring at Elandsdraai Pecan Growers 🌰

The orchards are alive with fresh green growth as our pecan trees wake up from winter dormancy. This is the start of a special stage in the pecan cycle — the flowering season.

Pecan trees have both “him” and “her” flowers on the same tree:
✨ The male flowers (catkins) release pollen.
✨ The female flowers are ready to catch it and begin forming the nuts we’ll harvest later in the year.

It’s a delicate, fascinating process — one that sets the foundation for the pecans you’ll enjoy months from now. 🌳💛

In 1983, Farmer’s Weekly featured our farm, Elandsdraai, sharing the story of how Albert Bouwmeester Snr patiently nurtured 3,000 pecan trees in Cullinan. The article highlighted the trials, mistakes, and wisdom gained in those early years — from battling ants to understanding soil health and zinc deficiencies.

Those lessons became the foundation for the flourishing orchards we farm today. 🌳✨

Now, a new generation continues the journey — applying the knowledge passed down while bringing fresh energy, innovation, and passion to the land.

🌱 Welcome to Elandsdraai Pecan Growers! 🌰

Our story began back in 1975, when Albert Bouwmeester Snr planted a 21-hectare pecan orchard on the family farm Elandsdraai in Cullinan, Gauteng. What started as his retirement project grew into a thriving family business.

As his retirement drew near, however, he increasingly involved his son, Albert Jnr, in the activities of the farm. The latter’s energy and enthusiasm for the enterprise saw him buying his father’s stake in the business, expanding the orchards, and erecting processing facilities.

Today at Elandsdraai Pecan Growers we proudly farm 55 hectares of pecans and process around 450 tons of nuts each year — not only our own harvest, but also pecans from fellow farmers in the area.
