HOW TO MEASURE HECTARES AND ACRES
Understanding how to measure land in hectares and acres is very important in farming. Proper land measurement helps in crop planning, spacing, fertilizer calculation, irrigation design, and estimating production costs and yield. Farmers need to know the size of their land before planting.
Basic Units of Land Measurement
The most common units used in agriculture are square metres, hectares, and acres.
1 square metre (m²) is a square measuring 1 metre by 1 metre.
1 hectare = 10,000 square metres
1 acre = 4,046.86 square metres
1 hectare = 2.47 acres
1 acre = 0.405 hectare
These are the main conversion figures every farmer should know.
Understanding a Hectare
A hectare is a piece of land measuring 100 metres by 100 metres.
This means if you measure 100 metres on one side and 100 metres on the other side, the land size is exactly 1 hectare.
Understanding an Acre
An acre is approximately 4,046.86 square metres.
A simple practical shape for one acre is about 64 metres by 63 metres.
This is close enough for field estimation.
How to Measure Land in the Field
Use a measuring tape, rope, chain, or measuring wheel.
Step 1
Measure the length of the land.
Step 2
Measure the width of the land.
Step 3
Multiply length by width.
Example
If your field is 200 metres long and 50 metres wide:
So the land is 1 hectare.
Converting Square Metres to Hectares
To convert square metres to hectares, divide by 10,000.
Converting Square Metres to Acres
Divide the area in square metres by 4,046.86.
Converting Hectares to Acres
Multiply hectares by 2.47.
Converting Acres to Hectares
Multiply acres by 0.405.
Local Practical Method
A farmer can use steps for rough estimation.
For example, if one normal step is about 1 metre, count steps for length and width, then multiply.
