One question we get quite often is:

β€œCan I come to your place in Benrose?”

Yes, you can. πŸ“

Seasonings & Condiments is based at 100 Main Reef Road, Benrose, Johannesburg.

And you do not have to be a large manufacturer or someone buying huge quantities to visit us.

Our customers include people buying herbs and spices for home use, resellers, people starting small product businesses, bulk buyers and businesses sourcing ingredients.

You might come to Benrose to:

β€’ collect an order
β€’ buy ingredients for home use
β€’ look for products to resell
β€’ enquire about bulk quantities
β€’ discuss ingredients for a product you are developing

One thing to keep in mind is that we operate from a working business and factory environment.

It is therefore slightly different from visiting a supermarket where every product is arranged and displayed on retail shelves.

If you are coming for something specific, it helps to know the product, form and quantity you need.

For example:

β€œI'm looking for 1 kg hibiscus.”

or

β€œI need rosemary powder and whole rosemary, 5 kg each.”

That makes it much easier for the team to assist you.

So yes, if you've ever wondered whether you can come to Benrose in person, yes you can come.

Have you ever opened a packet of goji berries and found that they have become sticky or started clumping together?

It does not automatically mean that they have gone bad.

Goji berries are dried fruit, and unlike many dried herbs and spices, they naturally contain quite a lot of sugar and still retain some moisture after drying.

Those natural sugars can attract moisture from the surrounding air.

This becomes more noticeable when goji berries are stored in:

β€’ warm conditions
β€’ humid environments
β€’ packaging that is frequently left open
β€’ areas where temperatures change regularly

As the fruit absorbs moisture or becomes warm, the berries soften and their surfaces can become tacky.

So what should you check?

Normal:
Slight stickiness, softness or clumping without any unusual smell or visible growth.

Be cautious:
Berries that are extremely wet, smell fermented or musty, show mould or have deteriorated noticeably.

Storage matters too.

Keep goji berries somewhere cool and dry, seal the packaging properly after opening and avoid leaving them exposed to humid air for long periods.

The bigger lesson is simple:

Dried fruit is not the same as a dried spice.

It still contains natural sugars and moisture, so its texture can change depending on how it is stored.

Starting a spice or herb resell business can look simple: buy stock, package it and start selling.

But some of the biggest mistakes happen before the first sale is even made.

Buying too much stock, choosing suppliers on price alone, poor storage and not calculating your real margins can quickly eat into your money.

Start smaller. Learn what sells.

Understand your costs. Then grow based on evidence.

🌿BEFORE YOU BUY HERBS IN BULK…

A cheaper price per kg doesn't always mean you're getting a better deal.

Before buying, ask:

Is it whole, cut or powdered?

What quantity do I actually need?

How will I store it?

How quickly can I sell or use it?

Does the quality suit what I'm making?

Sometimes buying 5kg and finishing it makes more business sense than buying 25kg because the price looked attractive.

Buy according to your market, not just according to the discount. 🌿

🌿 IF YOU HAD R1,000 TO START A SMALL SPICE BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD YOU BUY?

One mistake new resellers make is trying to stock everything at once.

You don't necessarily need 20 different products to start.

Sometimes it makes more sense to begin with a few everyday spices people already know and use, learn what your customers buy repeatedly, then grow your range from there.

Think about products such as:
β€’ Turmeric
β€’ Paprika
β€’ Garlic powder
β€’ Cinnamon
β€’ Chilli
β€’ Mixed herbs

The important question isn't only β€œWhat can I buy?”

It's β€œWhat can I sell again and again?”

If you had R1,000 to start, which 5 spices would you choose?
