Part 2: Jo’s advice to women wanting to start a business

There are hard parts to building a business that no one warns you about. Financial risk, months on end without taking a single rand out the bank, and pressure that can strain your relationships and family if you’re not careful. Jo’s built Upstage, San Quentin Events and Alkatraz from the ground up, and she’s felt every bit of that.

Her advice? Before you take the leap, have at least 3 months’ worth of expenses saved. That buffer is what gives you room to breathe while you find your footing.

Her second piece of advice comes from her own experience: don’t lose your femininity trying to fit in. Coming up in a male-dominated stage company, Jo found herself dressing down, jeans, boots, a fitted shirt, to blend in. It worked, but it wasn’t really her. Looking back, her message to women starting out is to stay feminine and stay true to yourself, rather than shrinking yourself to fit a mould that was never built with you in mind. 💪💄

Meet Bettina, the heart behind Bettina’s Café in Shed 1: Harvest Pantry!
Bettina traded a career in travel for her dream of creating a warm, welcoming space, and that passion shows in every detail, from the antique teacups on the tables to the love poured into every dish on the menu. The shop itself is always beautifully decorated with stunning flowers, adding to that warm, homely feel the moment you walk in.

Her inspiration for opening the café wasn’t the money, that would come later. It was about empowering women and creating employment. That’s the foundation the whole business was built on.

The biggest lesson she’s learned along the way is to believe in yourself even when times get tough. Some days you just have to dig deep and keep going.

Her proudest moment came last year when the café turned 21, and had a rose named after it. That rose will keep growing long after the café’s own story is told, a little piece of Bettina’s that outlives the day-to-day.

Her advice to other women wanting to start a business? Take the leap. Start small, and grow with it. ✨
