Why do I have to go to a Nigerian market to eat like an African in South Africa?

South Africans… why is our healthiest food not in our own stores?

Day 15 and I had to leave my own culture to eat properly…

The real reason I shop at a Nigerian market in South Africa…

We say “eat local” but where is our real food?

Full caption:

Day 15 of 19 and life has been hectic… but discipline doesn’t clock out just because you’re busy.

Even though I haven’t been posting consistently, I’ve still been showing up for myself through what I eat.

But here’s something that didn’t sit right with me…

I had to go to a Nigerian market just to access indigenous African foods like sorghum, millet, and natural plant-based ingredients.

In my own country.

That’s where I found real variety, real options, real nourishment.

Meanwhile, so many of the easily accessible “local” options around us are processed, unhealthy, and disconnected from what our bodies actually need.

So what are we really selling as South Africans?

And what are we normalizing?

This challenge is bigger than just food. It’s about awareness, access, and unlearning what we’ve been fed.

Busy or not… I’m still choosing better.

If you care about what you’re putting into your body, start asking where your food really comes from.

This past weekend at GDG Soweto’s Build with AI, the theme was clear: Agents, AI, and the future of intelligent systems.

But one thing stood out above everything else…
Data. Data. Data.

As developers and builders, we often ask:
“Is there a way around using existing datasets?”
The reality is… not really.

Because behind every intelligent agent, every workflow, every AI system, there is:

data sourcing

data engineering

data storage

data analysis

and continuous data creation

Without it, nothing runs.

And here’s where the real opportunity lies, especially for us on the continent.

We are not just behind in technology…
we are underrepresented in data.

Many of the systems we use today are not built from our context, our environments, or our lived realities. That’s why optimization often feels off. The inputs were never designed with us in mind.

So the mission is clear:
👉 We are not just consumers of AI
👉 We are creators of data

If you can’t find accurate African datasets, images, behaviors, or patterns…
then the work is to build, collect, and structure that data ourselves.

That’s where true innovation begins.

From leveraging tools like Google Cloud, open-source datasets, and AI credits, to understanding data pipelines, governance, and guardrails when building agents, the future builder is not just a coder…
they are a data thinker.

And this is where my perspective comes in.

As someone rooted in education, environmental science, and human development, I spoke about the idea of the Full-Stack Human.

Because while we are building intelligent systems externally…
we are also running a system internally.

Just like AI needs:

clean data

efficient pipelines

strong architecture

Humans need:

quality inputs (nutrition)

energy management

recovery

movement

We cannot talk about optimizing AI systems while ignoring human systems.

The future of building is not just technical.
It is biological, environmental, and deeply human.

So as we move toward AGI and more advanced agents…

Let’s ask ourselves:
👉 What data are we creating?
👉 Who are we building for?
👉 And are we optimizing the system behind the builder?

Because the real power shift will come when we build:
AI systems that reflect us… and humans who can sustain what they build.

Everyone wants AI… but nobody is fixing the DATA problem. 🇿🇦

Let’s be honest… we’re running before we can walk.

In South Africa, we’re obsessed with AI Engineering right now.
Chatbots, automation, fancy tools… all vibes.

But here’s the subtle truth:

👉 AI Engineering is building the smart systems.
👉 Data Engineering is making sure those systems actually have clean, structured, usable data.

And right now?
We have a data problem. Big time.

We’re still behind on:

Collecting quality data

Proper research methods

Storing data properly

Cleaning and structuring it

Analysing it in a meaningful way

No clean data = weak AI. Simple.

📊 Real-Life Example:
AI Engineer: Builds a chatbot for a bank 🏦
→ But it gives wrong answers because the data is outdated or messy.

Data Engineer: Builds the pipelines, cleans the data, structures it
→ Now the chatbot actually works properly.

🇿🇦 Real Talk:
We can’t skip steps, my bru.
AI without data is just hype.

If we want real innovation in SA,
we need to fix the foundation first.

What I’ve learned after 8 years of being vegan…
Meat is a myth. And so is the “protein problem"
Day 3/9 of my 90 Days of Growth Challenge.

This journey didn’t start as a lifestyle… it started as a challenge.
I was just testing myself.

But everything changed when I found community.
That’s when consistency became natural. That’s when it became who I am.

Now, 8 years later, here’s what I know for sure:

You don’t need meat to thrive.
You need knowledge. You need variety. You need intention.

Look at this plate…
Colorful. Diverse. Nutrient-dense.
And yes, the protein is there.

Being plant-based taught me to think differently about food.
To expand beyond what we’ve been told.
To build meals that actually nourish the body.

That’s why this challenge isn’t really for me anymore…
It’s for YOU.

If you’ve been curious about going plant-based,
you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Let me guide you.

Comment “PLANT” and I’ll plug you in 🌱

Let’s be honest.

A lot of us didn’t “suddenly” become sensitive… our bodies have been trying to tell us something.

Bloating. Discomfort. Low energy.

And we keep going back to the same thing?

Sometimes it’s not about restriction…

it’s about simple swaps.

Try this:

🥛 Dairy milk → plant-based milk

Your body might thank you.

Real conversations. Simple changes. Better living.

If you’re ready to feel the difference instead of guessing…
Join the movement. Start with one smoothie. One swap. One decision.

Let’s build this together 💚 Eat More Plants Africa
