Why do I have to go to a Nigerian market to eat like an African in South Africa?
South Africans… why is our healthiest food not in our own stores?
Day 15 and I had to leave my own culture to eat properly…
The real reason I shop at a Nigerian market in South Africa…
We say “eat local” but where is our real food?

Day 15 of 19 and life has been hectic… but discipline doesn’t clock out just because you’re busy.
Even though I haven’t been posting consistently, I’ve still been showing up for myself through what I eat.
But here’s something that didn’t sit right with me…
I had to go to a Nigerian market just to access indigenous African foods like sorghum, millet, and natural plant-based ingredients.
In my own country.
That’s where I found real variety, real options, real nourishment.
Meanwhile, so many of the easily accessible “local” options around us are processed, unhealthy, and disconnected from what our bodies actually need.
So what are we really selling as South Africans?
And what are we normalizing?
This challenge is bigger than just food. It’s about awareness, access, and unlearning what we’ve been fed.
Busy or not… I’m still choosing better.
If you care about what you’re putting into your body, start asking where your food really comes from.
