The Cooks' Table

The Cooks' Table permission, liberty, or ability to enter, approach, or pass to and from a place or to approach or communicate with a person or thing

The Cook's Table without complicating it too much is exactly what the event name is. A dinner night at The Cook's Table. The concept is that The Cooks' Table pops up at different unconventional venues from month to month. So you can imagine it's not your conventional dinner setting. We try not to give too much away as that is the whole idea that the guest come to a fresh experience and not having

any expectations so they get a genuine experience. Expectations can taint ones experiences we find. Guest are only given the venue location 24hrs prior to the event and the menu is a 3 course menu made up of the Cooks most successful experiments. Now and again we invite guest Cooks and Chefs where we can to join us in creating new food experiences. Never gimmicky, but always refreshing and an experience to share with friends and make new friends from.

Introducing The Quencher, our final creative catalyst for Friday’s configuration.

We are officially welcoming Union Gin to the table. Their modern expression is built on a rare piece of South African agricultural history. A deeply complex, bitter hybrid of Pomelo and Seville Orange bred in the early 1900s, this historic citrus now faces extinction, surviving in only a single remaining commercial orchard in the country.
By bottling this liquid, Primal acts as a vital botanical curator grounding the evening’s sensory palette in a flavor profile that is nearly lost to time. From our arrival ritual to the signature pairing for the main course, this liquid is handled as absolute art.
Like the 1950s Shebeen Salons we are reclaiming, nothing at this table is static. The space is raw, the disciplines are distinct, and the floor is level.

No full bar. No corporate clutter. Just pure expression and unfiltered dialogue.

The architecture of the room is locked. The final configurations are underway.

The Catalysts:
The Quencher: Primal × Rex Union Orange
Sonic Heritage: uMzulu Phaqa
The Narrative: Lwandile Nkanyuza / ByLwansta
The Nourishment: Zolitha

A conversation needs a place to land. To complete the triad for our evening on 29 May, we introduce our third Catalyst: Zolitha.

As a curator and the creative director of , her role as The Nourishment is about more than just cooking. It is about creating the physical safety a room needs to truly open up.

When we break bread together on level ground, the hierarchy breaks with it. The food sets the pace, slowing us down so we can actually digest the heavy things being brought to the table. Zolitha’s menu provides the rhythm for the night giving texture to the sonic histories shared by .phaqa and creating the breathing room needed to absorb the sharp introspective truths in ‘s writing.

Three practitioners. One table. No pedestals.

A Salon thrives on the architecture of words. Joining our first Catalyst, .phaqa , at the table for this same evening of exchange is our second Catalyst: Lwandile Nkanyuza.
Known for building honest, introspective spaces through sound and identity design under his moniker , his practice has recently found a new home on the page with his debut book, Really Listening. As The Narrative, Lwandile joins the room to help us unpack the quiet, often messy tension between creative survival and self-definition.
No stages. No lectures. Just an intimate conversation centered around what happens when we slow down enough to listen to the room.

The South African Salon has always existed. It lived in the pulse of 1950s Shebeens and the back-room grit of local Taverns. Spaces where the “spectacle” didn’t exist, but the exchange was everything. These were our original anchors for music, intellect, and unfiltered thought.
The Cook’s Table Salon is a modern evolution of that same energy.
On 29 May, we gather Catalysts to help us navigate the night through their unique crafts. No stages, no pedestals, and no distance. Just a shared meal and the kind of conversation that only happens when the hierarchy is stripped away.

To anchor the dialogue of our inaugural Salon, we require voices that are as rooted in tradition as they are in innovation. We are honored to reserve a seat for S’phiwe Moya, known to many as .phaqa.
S’phiwe joins us as The Anchor, pioneering a contemporary sound that borrows deeply from her heritage rooted in Zulu culture. At The Cook’s Table Salon, she will not be performing from a stage; instead, her contribution is woven into the very fabric of the evening.
Guests will experience a rare, intimate acoustic sharing from Umzulu Phaqa not as a spectacle, but as a shared perspective among peers. This is an invitation to engage with the person behind the music in a space designed for slow, intentional exchange.

• Location: Johannesburg
• Investment: R500 (Includes a shared meal)
• Access: Limited seats available to preserve the intimacy of the exchange
