Our Story

As I look back on my childhood, there are a couple of moments which I always reminisce about- my times playing on the farm with the animals, watching Uncle Benjie pick vegetables from the garden, being in the kitchen when my mom, aunts and grannies were cooking, the family gathered around a long communal dining table talking about the old days and laughing at my uncles jokes which would switch to talk about religion, sport and politics and then back to my uncles jokes.

On my moms side of the family, the family nights on the farm were not complete without loud music -which I’m sure kept the chickens and geese up- and my grandparents teaching the young ones a few dance moves. I remember everyone dancing beneath the stars, smiling, singing along and obviously the men arguing about the sequence of events of a particular story or how the left-over meat should be braaied. On my dads side of the family, after dinner, tea and an array of cakes and desserts would be served. The tea, to this day, is always brewed in a large tea-pot on the stove by an aunt and I remember not being able to choose which cakes to eat, so I’d eat them all and feel sick to my stomach. Absolutely worth it!

I guess that without knowing it, my upbringing was shaping my career which is driven by everything I am insanely passionate about- food, entertaining, sustainable farming and people.

After school, I found myself working in some of the top restaurants in the country, then one of the top hotels in the world and last year partnered with the San Pellegrino Top Young Chef in Africa & Middle East who also placed in the Top 7 worldwide. With this, I’ve learned that food is only as good as the quality of ingredients you use, the amount of love you put in and the people you get to share it with, so I’d love to invite you all to the Newcastle Farmers Market, launching this May, to share my love for food, drinks, farming, music and good people with me. There is no place like home, and I would love to treat my hometown humans with something to do at least once a month, which promotes entrepreneurship and unity . I’d like to ask everyone, despite your culture, religion, nationality, ethnicity and race to join a new family, the Newcastle Market Family.
