Since I was a young adult, I had this dream of becoming a nutritionist one day. I had a specific interest in reading up on the latest nutritional information and healthy ways of living. I surely had the best plans on hand for anyone with a weight

or health issue. I never anticipated how my life would change from a high school teacher to a mom, who had to put her craving for dietary info into action. My family of 4 was forced by nature to make a radical change in the way we were eating and thinking about food. We came to learn that if food you are consuming is not absorbed properly, very little or almost no nutrients are available to feed your brain. This gut issue may cause many developmental delays in children. We had to change our everyday food into food that can heal the body and help develop the brain, which has the amazing ability to change itself. Michael Merzenich, a well-known neuroscientist, claims that we can also change the very structure of the brain itself and increase the capacity to learn. Unlike a computer, the brain is constantly adapting itself. It doesn’t simply learn: it is always “learning how to learn.” He said it is not an inanimate vessel we fill: rather it is more like a living creature with an appetite, one that can grow and change itself with proper nourishment and exercise. With this in mind, the aim is to eliminate empty calorie food stuff and replacing it with gut-healing foods to nourish. We try to avoid sugar containing foods, refined carbohydrates, colourants and preservatives as far as possible, because they are unfamiliar to the body and not seen as food. They may be termed “empty calories”, possibly the real cause of cravings, for sweet and salt tastes mostly. After eating these empty calories you will note that you stay hungry, because the body isn’t nourished with nutrients. What is even worse is that refined sugar and carbs may cause inflammation, obesity and ADHD and the consumption of colourants and preservatives can result in allergies and hyperactivity. It was extremely difficult for me to make the mind shift, just the thought of it made me want to quit before I even started. But the results are priceless. There is this saying:
