I called back and the phone didn't ring twice before he picked up.

“Where are you?" he screamed. I said I was in my room and was sleeping when he called.

"Did you diewhen you were asleep?
Say the truth, you didn't sleep in your room. I've been in front of your gate all night?"

I live in a walled apartment that is always locked unless you have a key before you can enter.

He was coming to pay a surprise visit after we'd said our goodbyes. He got here, called, and I didn't pick up, so he thought I was in another man's room.
I went out and truly he was standing there.

He asked where I slept last night and I said in my room. He concluded I spent the night in the room of one of the guys in the house. The reason I didn't pick up his calls.

My phone was on silent, but he wouldn't believe me. I slept right after we spoke, but he said it was too soon for me to sleep that deep. The only thing he wants now is a confession before he'll forgive me.

Confession for a sin I didn't commit? Is that how it works in relationships? You can't sleep soundly in your own bed without suspicion?
Because of why?

Or what do y’all think I should do?

I remember that day so clearly. My husband, Daniel, told me his family wanted an urgent meeting at his parents' house in Okoro Village.

I wasn't feeling well that morning, so I begged him to go without me. But he insisted along. almost forced me to come

We drove in silence. On the way, it suddenly hit me that I never even asked why they called for the meeting. Just as Daniel opened his door to step out of the car, I asked softly:

"Babe, what's this meeting really about?" He didn't look at me. He just said, "You'll understand when we get inside."

We walked in. Everyone was already seated his brothers, aunties, uncles, parents, even some extended relatives from the city. We were the last to arrive, so we greeted everyone politely and sat down.

After a few moments, his father's elder brother, Uncle Samuel, started talking.

He went round and round, speaking in riddles about how "no one is perfect" and
"life comes with mistakes" and "sometimes we must accept what we cannot change."

I didn't understand where he was going... until he suddenly turned to face me directly.

“My daughter," he said, "what I'm about to say may hurt you deeply. But you must be strong."

"Your husband has a child with another woman.

They now have a five-month-old son... and the lady is very sick. She has nobody but your husband.

So she and the baby will be moving here so both of you can take care of her."
"She is much younger than you - think of her as your little sister."

Before I could breathe, Daniel's mother continued:
"Her name is Esther, and she's already his wife.

We travelled and paid her bride price last
August - before she lost her parents. We didn't want to upset you with the news until now."

I sat there like a rock. My ears were buzzing.
My heart was racing. I looked at his mother in disbelief.
"Mama... you knew?"

That was all I could say.
They kept talking and talking, explaining, justifying... like they were doing something reasonable. Then Uncle Samuel finally asked me

"Do you have anything to say?"
They expected tears. They expected begging.
They expected shock.

But what I said next shook the entire room more than they ever imagined... 😭💔💔😭
