Through the Commodities for Sustainable Food Processing (3SFP) Project, Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre successfully conducted a five-day training in food processing and product development using sorghum and cowpeas at Katopola Farming Institute.

The training brought together lead farmers, food processors, seed companies, and consumer representatives from Chipangali and Kasenengwa districts to strengthen their skills in value addition and processing technologies.

Participants gained practical knowledge in producing a range of nutritious and marketable products, including sorghum porridge, cowpea snacks, enriched flour blends, plant-based milk, meat alternatives, gluten-free beer, and snack bars.

The initiative aims to empower smallholder farmers to adopt processing technologies, enhance food security, create entrepreneurial opportunities, and build climate resilience through agroecological practices.

Together, we are transforming sorghum and cowpeas from field crops into value-added products that improve nutrition, increase household incomes, and contribute to sustainable livelihoods.

Climate doesn't change chemistry. A poison is a poison, whether sprayed in France or Chongwe.

Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre hosted a consultative meeting for small-scale organic fertilizer producers from across Zambia to discuss the formation of the Zambia Organic Fertilizer Association (ZANOFA).

The meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, quality assurance, and collective advocacy for the organic fertilizer sector. As discussions around the regulation and recognition of organic agriculture continue in Zambia, participants emphasized the importance of establishing a unified voice that can contribute to policy development, industry standards, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

KATC is encouraged by this important step towards strengthening Zambia’s organic agriculture sector and looks forward to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable food systems and environmental stewardship.

Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre (KATC) yesterday held a productive meeting with the University of Zambia (UNZA) Department of Food Science and Nutrition to explore potential areas of collaboration.

The discussions focused on developing practical training opportunities that respond to the needs of farmers, food processors, and entrepreneurs. Among the proposed areas of collaboration is the development of a hands-on Diploma Programme in Food Science and Technology with integrated nutrition components, as well as product-specific short courses tailored for start-up enterprises, small-scale processors, and food processing facilities.

KATC warmly welcomes this initiative and is excited about the prospects of partnering with UNZA. Such a collaboration aligns with our commitment to strengthening value addition, food processing, and marketing skills among farmers and agri-entrepreneurs, enabling them to derive greater value from their organic produce and access broader markets.

We look forward to building a strong partnership that contributes to sustainable food systems, skills development, and improved livelihoods.

We conclude the week with the successful completion of a two-week training for youths from the Mantapala Refugee Resettlement under the project “Gender-Specific Strengthening of the Psychosocial and Economic Resilience of Refugee Children and Young People,” being implemented by Caritas Zambia in partnership with REPSSI.

During the training, the youths gained practical skills in Sustainable Organic Agriculture, including compost and Bokashi making, soil health management, green manures and crop health management, as well as facilitation and community engagement skills. The hands-on sessions were aimed at empowering them with climate-smart and environmentally friendly farming practices that can improve livelihoods, strengthen food security, and equip them to effectively share knowledge within their communities.

We are proud to have been part of this journey and encouraged by the passion, commitment, and enthusiasm shown by the youths as they prepare to become change agents and champions of agroecology in their communities.
