Tensi0ns have sharply escalated between Botswana and South Africa after reports that Botswana has introduced strong diplomatic and economic measures in response to rising concerns over alleged xenophobic treatment of its citizens in South Africa by South Africans. According to official statements, President Duma Boko declared a state of emergency and ordered the closure of borders, demanding the return of Botswana nationals currently in South Africa.

Reports also indicate that Botswana has taken the unusual step of cutting electricity supply to parts of South Africa, a move that could w0rsen existing power challenges in the country. In a strongly worded address, President Boko critjcised the treatment of Bostwana citizens and reminded South Africa of Botswana’s historical support during the anti-apartheid struggle. He stated that the current situation reflects deep frustration and called for respect and dignity for all citizens. The developments have raised concern across the region as diplomatic relations face serious strain.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Africans were kidnapped and displayed in cages across Europe and America — from Paris to Hamburg, London to New York. Millions came to watch, not animals, but human beings stripped of dignity and freedom.
These “ethnological expositions” were not entertainment; they were propaganda. They taught generations that white supremacy was natural and that African lives were lesser. The pain of those exhibitions still echoes through history — a silence that must be broken.
We speak because they could not.
We remember because the world tried to forget.

History often highlights Adolf Hi**er as the embodiment of evil, yet the atrocities of King Leopold II of Belgium remain buried in silence. Hi**er’s crimes against humanity are rightly condemned, but Leopold’s colonial reign in the Congo claimed the lives of over 10 million Africans—through forced labor, mutilation, and terror—without accountability or reparations.
It is hypocrisy when one man is universally remembered as the most wicked, while another’s genocide against Africans is minimized or erased from global memory. Belgium has yet to pay a single cent in reparations for the suffering inflicted on the Congolese people.
We must speak truth to power: African lives matter, African history matters, and justice delayed is justice denied.
