A 33-year-old driver has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of culpable homicide following a tragic road accident earlier this year. Nyasha Muteweye was found guilty of causing the death of a passenger through a series of negligent actions while operating a Toyota Hiace on February 5, 2026. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court has cancelled Muteweye’s driver’s license and prohibited him from operating Class 2 vehicles for a period of two years.

The incident occurred around midnight as Muteweye was traveling along Simon Mazorodze Road toward Waterfalls. According to the court findings, the driver permitted a passenger to hang onto the rear of the moving vehicle. This disregard for safety was compounded by excessive speed as the vehicle approached Chinzou Roundabout. Muteweye failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to swerve violently.

The passenger subsequently fell from the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. Although the victim was rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital for emergency treatment, he succumbed to his injuries five days later. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) highlighted several layers of negligence in the case, including the failure to maintain control of the vehicle and the decision to allow unsafe passenger conduct.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred yesterday at the 176km peg along the Harare–Nyamapanda Road, near Suswe.

A Malawi-bound BRD Luxury Coach bus, travelling from Cape Town, South Africa, was involved in the accident at around 1300 hours.

Initial reports from police attending the scene indicate that 14 people have died.

The bus was carrying 63 passengers. Several injured victims have been transported to Mutoko District Hospital and Kotwa District Hospital for treatment.

Authorities say more details will be released as investigations continue.
