Benton Rise Farm is a small community focused fresh produce market serving the Mornington Peninsula and the southern suburbs of Melbourne. The centre piece of our market is a 100+yo Red Rattler train, kids petting farm, coffee, treats and fresh produce we are certain you will enjoy the experience. We also offer a delivery service so you can enjoy fresh local produce delivered direct to your door every Thursday.

IT’S ASPARAGUS SEASON!

We’ve been trained to expect straight, uniform asparagus spears. But they don’t all come out straight and the same size. 🙅🏽‍♀️

So what happens to all the spears that don’t fit supermarket standards?

Well, you know how easily asparagus ‘snaps’ at the point where the fibrous base ends and the tender tip starts? Well in production, a lot of the spears snap, creating what the industry calls ‘seconds.’

We think your work has just been ‘snapped’ in half!
Pre-snapped, still crisp, tender, delicious, if a little crooked, these spears are still begging to be devoured!

Bring home farm-fresh asparagus that would otherwise go to waste.
Picked yesterday, naturally snapped, super tender, and in big generous bunches this weekend at the train shop.

Just $4 for a big, generous, pre-snapped bunch.

Aussie garlic is back at the Farm Gate as of this week!

Garlic has an almost year-long cycle and historically, the guide has always been to plant on the shortest day of the year, and harvest on the longest day of the year.

While changing weather patterns have meant that no longer holds completely true, in cooler regions like Victoria we plant between March and May/June and harvest as the leaves start to turn brown, around 6-8 months after planting.

With tops still attached, you may recognise garlic being braided and hung to cure. Once completely dry, the tops are trimmed and give you garlic that will keep for months!

From the farm in Main Ridge to Your at our farm gate 🍓🥑

Rocky Creek strawberries and avocados are in store from today, grown by Matt Gallace and good grab down at Rocky Creek the third generation of his family to farm the land at Main Ridge.

These strawberries need to be tasted to believed!
And the avocados are a good size

Strawberries for lunchboxes, afternoon snacks and a little something sweet. Avocados for toast, salads and homemade guacamole.

Limited quantities, grown close to home. Another lovely reason to eat local.

Spring is finding its way to the farm gate 🌱🍓

I’ve been out visiting and chatting with local farmers about what’s growing across the Peninsula and what we can bring to Benton Rise.

Over the coming weeks, look out for local strawberries and blueberries, our farm-grown broad beans, plus tomatoes and cucumbers.

And we’d love to hear from our backyard growers and small-scale farmers, too. Got more growing than you can use? We’d love to help sell your surplus through our farm gate.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL WEEKEND MEAL PREP

We’re thrilled to announce a new relationship with Greg’s Family Butchers in Rosebud!

The relationship came about through chit chat with some regular customers Jess, Tyler and Maverick. Greg is Tyler’s dad and their family run butcher shop in Rosebud had been in the family for generations and in another wonderful example of our community focus, I had a chat with Kyle during the week and we now are able to announce you’ll be able to pick up not just your fruit and veg, but also your meat during your weekly Benton Rise shop.

Mince without the fillers, that’s not fluorescent red! Meat that’s thoughtfully sourced instead of pressuring farmers and compromising animal welfare. It’s a welcome addition to our fridges at The Farm.

So for a chilled, slow last day of the holidays, get the errands done with coffee in hand and while the kids play.
