Have you tried jujube dates? 🍎

Sometimes called red dates, jujubes are a small fruit with a crisp bite that may remind you of a mini Honeycrisp apple. They’re a source of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, making them a nutritious addition to your fall favorites.

Enjoy them raw, dried, candied, or steeped into a warm cup of tea. As the weather starts to cool down, try making your own jujube tea at home:

Add 4 to 6 dried jujubes to 2 cups of water with a cinnamon stick, fresh ginger, and a few cloves. Bring everything to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer. Add a little honey or apple juice for extra sweetness.

Warm, cozy, and a great way to enjoy one of the more unique fruits grown right here at Austin-Kidd Farm. 🍂

Our Parent and Child Foraging Excursion on Sunday, September 6th from 10–12 will
guide families through beginner-friendly plant identification, safe exploration, and hands-on discovery across Austin-Kidd Farm. Parents and children will learn together as we move through accessible areas, observe plant characteristics, compare textures and scents, and build confidence outdoors in a supportive, curiosity-driven environment.
We’ll also include a scavenger hunt to keep kids engaged — inviting families to find unique textures, natural colors, and strong scents. Please remember to register every person in your party, including all children, so we can plan materials and ensure a safe, well-balanced group experience.

🌱A historic win for Austin-Kidd Farm and agriculture in Mecklenburg County!

Austin-Kidd Farm is proud to be one of the first Voluntary Agricultural District/Enhanced Voluntary Agricultural District farms in Mecklenburg County!

This designation represents more than recognition for our farm. It represents a commitment to protecting agriculture, preserving working farmland, and ensuring that farming continues to have a place in the future of Mecklenburg County.

Established by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners in 2025, the Voluntary Agricultural District program helps protect qualifying working farms from the pressures that can come with non-farm development. The program increases the visibility of local agriculture, helps reduce conflicts between farms and surrounding development, and gives farmers a stronger voice in conversations about land use and the future of their communities.

For Austin-Kidd Farm, a farm with roots dating back to 1910, becoming amongst Mecklenburg County’s first Voluntary Agricultural Districts is another chapter in a story that has spanned generations. As our surrounding communities continue to grow and change, this designation helps affirm something important: agriculture still belongs here.

It’s not just a win for us. It’s a win for our community. Protecting working farms helps strengthen our local food system, preserve the agricultural heritage of Mecklenburg County, and maintain open spaces that support healthy soil, water, wildlife, and pollinators. As our county continues to grow and develop, preserving farmland also helps ensure that agriculture remains part of our landscape, our communities, and our future for generations to come.

Last week, we welcomed an amazing group of campers from Brownicity to the farm for a day of exploring where food comes from and connecting with nature.

The campers from Brownicity enjoyed a morning of goat milking, egg collecting, meeting our young goats, foraging, nature art, and homemade ice cream.

Thank you for spending the day with us and making such special memories on the farm. We cannot wait to have you back! đź’š
